Steve will share the remarkable story behind a growing network of Humanist schools in Uganda—schools that serve some of the country’s most underserved communities while championing reason, compassion, and tolerance. These schools offer a distinctive approach to education: one that respects freedom of thought, encourages rational enquiry, and fosters social responsibility.
Over the past 15 years, Uganda Humanist Schools Trust has helped establish and support multiple primary and secondary schools across Uganda, providing life changing education to empower children to think critically and act ethnically. As Uganda rolls out a new national curriculum, Humanist schools are rising to the challenge; nurturing open-minded, evidence-based education that values both religious and secular worldviews.
Together, we'll learn:

The challenges and triumphs of building inclusive schools in rural African communities.
How global solidarity and grassroots action can support educational change.

About the speaker: Steve Hurd is a former teacher and education consultant who has worked extensively in Africa. He founded the Uganda Humanist Schools Trust in 2008 to support the development of schools grounded in Humanist values.
