Saturday Social

  • The Mount House 6 The Mount Shrewsbury, England, SY3 8PS United Kingdom (map)

For our August social, which is on a Saturday this month, we’ll be making a trip to Shrewsbury, for a special BrumHums guided tour of Charles Darwin’s birthplace. This historic Georgian house, built in 1797, stands proudly in the town. It was here that Charles Darwin was born on 12th February 1809 and spent his formative years exploring the natural world around him. The Mount is where Darwin's curiosity about nature began, leading to his ground-breaking work on evolution. The house offers stunning views of the River Severn and the surrounding countryside. Learn about the Darwin family and their contributions to science and society. The trip could be extended to include lunch and a visit to other places of interest in Shrewsbury, such as Darwin's Childhood Garden, Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, or The Quarry, a beautiful park along the River Severn, perfect for a leisurely stroll.

You could meet us there in good time for the 10.45am tour, or join some other members on the train from Birmingham. The guided tour of the house will cost £7 per person. Please sign up if you’d like to come, so we can get in touch with you nearer the time with the final details.
