Humanist Approaches to the ‘Spiritual’

  • Stirchley Baths 2-4 Bournville Lane Birmingham, England, B30 2JT United Kingdom (map)

We warmly invite you to join us this May at Stirchley Baths to explore the concept of ‘spirituality’ within a non-religious worldview. What do we understand by the word spiritual when we remove the supernatural? Does the term have a place in humanist thought, or should we be looking for new ways to describe our deepest experiences?

💬 What to Expect:

In this session, we will dive into a discussion on the intersection of humanism, neuroscience, and the human experience. Whether it is a sense of awe when looking at the stars or a profound connection to others, many of us have experiences that are often labelled as ‘spiritual’. We will explore:

  • Defining the Spiritual: Does the word have a place in humanist life, or is it too tied to religious doctrine?

  • Humanist Needs: Do we have ‘spiritual needs’ for connection, meaning, and reflection, and how do we meet them?

  • The Science of Awe: What does modern neuroscience tell us about the brain during these profound moments of experience?

This will be an open discussion evening where your thoughts, questions, and personal reflections are very much encouraged.

📍 Location & Accessibility:

We are excited to be trying out Stirchley Baths for this meeting. It is a brilliant community hub, conveniently located:
