Join us for a virtual walk through Birmingham’s vibrant humanist heritage, from Baskerville to BPAS, and beyond. Taking in sites of secularist lectures and radical gatherings, meeting places of rationalists and reformers, ethical societies and humanist groups, and the birth and burial places of some of humanism’s better and lesser known heroes, this talk will put humanist Birmingham on the map. Drawing on research carried out as part of Humanists UK’s Humanist Heritage project, we’ll uncover a rich history of freethinkers and activists, and find their echoes in the city today.
Maddy Goodall is Humanist Heritage Coordinator at Humanists UK, working since 2019 on researching and sharing the history and influence of humanism in the UK. She now leads on a two-year project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Humanist Heritage: Doers, Dreamers, Place Makers.
