At our May meeting, we’ll be looking at the growing pressure for a separation between church and state. As Christianity continues its decline, the campaign to disestablish the Church of England and remove its privileges is gathering momentum.
In this talk, Stephen Evans will explore the constitutional relationship between church and state, and recent developments in the campaign for disestablishment.
With wide speculation that Prince William is reluctant to assume the role of the Supreme Governor of the Church of England when he becomes king, Stephen will set out why the time has come to cut symbolic and institutional ties with the church by ending the bishops’ automatic right to seats in the legislature, by removing laws requiring Christian worship in schools, and by doing away with the head of state’s title of ‘Defender of the Faith’.
Stephen is the Chief Executive of the National Secular Society and a regular media commentator on the role of religion in public life.
